Hamilton’s gifted students are taking the road less travelled — and it’s making all the difference.

Zoe Branigan-Pipe and Beth Carey lead the Enrichment and Innovation Centre at Holbrook Elementary Public School. It’s a special classroom that caters mostly to gifted students — children who score around the 99th percentile in a standardized intelligence test — but its weekly, after-school drop-in program is open to any student across the board.

Once a month, gifted students in grades 5 to 8 are invited to the enrichment centre along with their intellectual peers for a day of non-traditional, inquiry-based learning. The students, from schools across Hamilton, take taxis to Holbrook, where they’re grouped with others from their part of the city……
